The pressure is on Donald Glover. It was recently announced that Glover would be playing the role of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming untitled Han Solo project. The Internet reacted of course but it was Glover’s Mom who really put the pressure on him.
During his appearance on the Ellen Degeneres show, Glover talked about the casting news.
“It’s crazy, I don’t know. I’m very, like, honored, it’s a very big deal. There’s this thing going around on the internet of me in a Star Wars t-shirt when I was in high school. So it’s been a long thing.”
Upon learning the news, Glover t0ld his Dad first but it was his mom who had the strongest reaction.
“I told my dad immediately. My mom was in the back, she was like, ‘Don’t mess it up.’ She was like, ‘Don’t mess this up!’ Cause Billy Dee is like — that’s hers. ”
Han Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, released the following statement regarding Glover joining the cast:
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
The press release mentions that the film will explore Lando’s “formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld.” The role of Lando was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The untitled Han Solo movie will open in theaters on May 25, 2018.
