Wonder Woman is proving that audiences are extremely ready for a female-lead superhero movie to be in theaters. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman has earned an additional $57.2M in its second weekend domestically. This brings the domestic total for Wonder Woman up to $205 million in two weeks.
This was only a 45% drop for Wonder Woman, an impressive feat. The last comic book movie to only drop such a small percentage was Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.
Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman had some serious competition from Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, which kicked off Univeral’s Monster Universe, but the film was only able to earn $32.2 million for the movie’s opening weekend. This is a disappointing opening for a film that is expected to kickstart an entire cinematic universe.
Rounding out the box office this weekend included the new horror movie, It Comes at Night ($6 million), Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie ($12.3 million), Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($10.7 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($6.2 million).
Wonder Woman is the first movie within the DCEU to earn a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and to receive widespread praise from critics and fans.
Here is my review of Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.
