The director search for Suicide Squad 2 has been extensive, including talks with Mel Gibson, but it appears that the sequel has found its director. Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) is the frontrunner to be helming Suicide Squad 2.
Collet-Serra has been in high-demand amongst Hollywood elite and is best known for his work on Orphan, Non-Stop and most recently The Shallows starring Blake Lively. Collet-Serra is likely to take Squad in a different direction following David Ayer’s original vision.
Last summer Suicide Squad was a box office success, grossing over $745 million worldwide, but Squad fell short amongst entertainment critics and fans. Standouts Will Smith and Margot Robbie are set to reprise their roles for the sequel. In addition, Robbie will also be re-teaming with Ayer for Gotham City Sirens, an all-female DC villains focused movie.
After the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, many wondered what the future of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) would look like but Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman has righted the ship and reenergized audiences around the world.
Suicide Squad 2 has no release date at this time but production could start as early as the end of this year. The next installment for the DCEU will be Justice League on November 17, 2017.
