Jaume Collet-Serra will not be behind the camera for Suicide Squad 2 instead he has moved over to Disney’s Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson at the helm.
Sources close to the project noted that Collet-Serra (The Shallows) saw Jungle Cruise as a better opportunity for him as a filmmaker because he could put his own take on a story, instead of continuing an already established storyline.
Plot details are unknown but Cruise is based on the theme park attraction, in the vein of Pirates of the Caribbean. The Pirates franchise has been a massive success for Disney and Collet-Serra is hoping to repeat that with Johnson in the starring role.
Warner Bros now faces the need to find another visionary to take on Suicide Squad 2. Initial rumors had indicated that Mel Gibson was in the running but Collet-Serra seemed to be the front-runner. Squad 2 could benefit from a big name director, a director that could balance character storytelling with huge action set pieces.
David Ayer directed Suicide Squad, which grossed $745 million worldwide and featured an all-star Hollywood cast. Ayer is currently working on a Gotham City Sirens spin-off film for Warner Bros. featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
