The 2017 summer box office has been filled with triumphs and disappointments, most recently The Dark Tower. Leave it to a horror franchise to revitalize the summer box office numbers. Annabelle Creation is estimated to bring in $36.5 million opening weekend. Creation takes place within the popular Conjuring franchise, which has routinely impressed audiences and critics alike. It’s possible that Creation could reach over $40 million if Saturday showings hold strong, the film has made $15 million on Friday.
With little competition, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is on track to make an additional $10.5 million in its fourth weekend of release. With that Dunkirk will close in on $150 million domestically and $350 million worldwide.
Completing the top five this weekend will be the kid-friendly comedy, The Nut Job 2, in third place followed by The Dark Tower and Girls Trip. The Dark Tower will face a 63% drop in its second weekend, making an estimated $7.3 million. With low box office returns and negative reception from die-hard fans of the book series, the future of the Tower series remains unknown.
