As the summer blockbuster season concludes, late August releases are not the lifeline some had hoped. This weekend featured two new wide releases, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and Stephen Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky, but despite star power from Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Channing Tatum, theater owners endured their lowest-grossing weekend of 2017.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard took the top spot earning $21.6 million, coming in second was Annabelle: Creation with $15.5 million. The Conjuring film spin-off has increased its total to $160.7 million globally. Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky debuted with $8.1 million. Logan Lucky features some impressive star power with Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Daniel Craig, Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes and Hilary Swank.
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk continues it impressive both domestically and internationally. The World War II epic made an additional, $6.7 million. This brings its total up to $392.7 million globally. Closing out the top five was The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature with $5.1 million.
While this summer box office hasn’t impressed, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman continues to be the star of summer 2017. Wonder Woman has officially crossed the $800 million mark at the global box office. The only film to earn more this summer is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
