This weekend continued September’s impressive showing at the box office and has been a much-needed lifeline. Fox’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle earned with $39 million and took the top spot, beating out the family-friend Lego: Ninjago Movie.
Kingsman: The Secret Service was released back in 2015 and brought in $36.2 million. Chris Aronson, distribution chief at Fox, echoed the success of Kingman.
“I think it’s really a very strong opening. We’re right where we expected it to be. Anytime you can open a sequel bigger than the first one you’re onto something.”
Lego: Ninjago Movie grossed $21.2 million and took the third place at the box office. Early projections had the Lego spin-off film opening within the $30 million range. The Lego movie franchise continues to see diminishing returns. The Lego Movie (2014) shocked the box office with a $69.1 million opening and found critical and fan success. The Lego Batman Movie (2017) made $53 million.
The biggest and most surprising story of the weekend goes once again to IT. IT brought in an additional $30 million. IT continues to break box office records. Earlier this week, the film passed The Exorcist to become the highest-grossing horror film in history.
American Assassin and Home Again rounded out the top five.
