Audiences wanted to a play a game. The latest chapter in the Saw franchise, Jigsaw, won the Halloween box office, earning $16.3 million. Early tracking had the eighth film in the Saw franchise opening higher but the film was likely hurt by negative reviews and low Rotten Tomatoes score of 39%.
The Halloween theme continued with Boo 2! A Madea Halloween earning second place. Boo 2! made an additional $5.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $19 million. Geostorm, Happy Death Day and Blade Runner 2049 rounded out the box office.
This weekend also featured two new releases, Thank You For Your Service and George Cloney’s Suburbicon ($2.8 million) but neither could crack the box office top five. Thank You For Your Service earned positive reviews and a high Rotten Tomatoes score but didn’t connect with audiences, earning only $3.7 million.
When it comes to horror movies, 2017 has been a standout year from Get Out to IT. IT remains in the top ten of box office totals, bringing in an additional $323,730,202.
Overseas, Disney and Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok opened massively. The film opened in 52% of its international markets, earning $107.6 million. These results are setting up a clear box office victory Thor: Ragnarok next weekend.
