The Thanksgiving weekend is primetime for movie-going, and Pixar’s Coco dominated the box office, earning an estimated $71.2 million over the 5-day holiday and the No. 1 spot. Justice League arrived in the No. 2 spot, bringing in $60 million, a 57% drop from its opening weekend. The DC film has now grossed $171.5 million.
Coco benefited from positive reviews (96% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and an A-Plus CinemaScore) and word-of-mouth, along with a family friend rating. The Día de los Muertos inspired film has already set a box office record in Mexico, becoming the highest-grossing movie in Mexico’s history.
Justice League has reached $300 million at the international box office but failed to cross the $200 million mark domestically, only reaching $171.2 million after 10 days. The box office performance of Justice League has garnered headlines around the world. Has the DCEU failed? What will happen next for our favorite heroes? Time will tell as the box office totals continue into the Christmas holiday but the initial returns aren’t promising.
